The Civil War by Victory Games, anyone interested?

This game came out in 1983, myself and a friend played it a hell of a lot, it looks very simple in its layout, but actually the strategy required to win is far from easy and we found that the game represented the issues facing the Union/Confederate commanders amazingly accurately.

Anyway this is available using Vassal, the rules are responsibly complex and score 7 out of 10 on that scale, but i found them just the normal memory test rather than being difficult to grasp.

Anyone played this or would be interested in learning how to play it? To avoid frustration a good knowledge of the rules would be required before starting, also i have never used Vassal before and how to preform some functions of the game using Vassal are still unclear.

Why don't they just go ahead and make them into computer games?

I assume they feel there is no demand to recreate old cardboard/paper games as a PC game?? so that is where Vassal software has tried to fill the gap by allowing a basic PBEM system to be used on old boardgames.

No, you need to know the rules. Of course there may be some moral issues.....

As tallin says the whole idea of the Vassal software is that you can play the old cardboard/paper games but through Email provided both players have DL the correct software, the "moral issues" he refers to is that fact you cannot see what your opponent is doing and the software will not prevent you or your opponent from performing actions that break the rules, hence you have to trust your opponent 100% and both players need to understand the rules so you don't perform an illegal act by innocent mistake.

I often feel that is worrying about their winning % on the ladders that makes some players cheat, so the fact there is no points or % to be gained by using Vassal at the club might counter that?

This is a great game, I would love to play via Vassal, either live or pbem, any time. Beginners welcome!
