Disrupt them , isolate, outmanoeuver and decimate prior to an assault, preferably all at the same time and then strike from multiple directions with fresh units of high morale, training and supplied well, then pray it's exactly opposite for the troops in targeted location or try to outguess the enemy at least - if they are of low morale and low on numbers they sometimes do not even have to be of poor quality or not supplied sufficiently nor fatigued to crack down and yield.Prep them with Your arty assets, vector an air strike - all that the field commander deem a combat mission and a direct action assignment.

Forgot to add - try not to get yourself in such a quandary before launching an attack.

RE: attacking
Don't forget schwerpunkt: The art of concentrating your attack on localized weak points, looking to achieve breakthroughs. Then exploit your breakthroughs by surrounding front line troops that may be pinned down or by wreaking havoc on rear-area units.

RE: attacking

That is curious. I usually have difficulty defending. Attacking I find easy, but it does depend on what nation you are playing. I like to use the terrain as best as possible to keep my units from being seen until the last possible moment. I try to hit the line suddenly, and with as many units as possible, to minimize defensive artillery (give him too many targets to shoot at).

I usually use a stack maxed surrounded by broken down companies, to disquise it. I prefer assaulting to shooting. If I get a lot of engineers I will stack those together...they can do some awesome damage when assaulting.

I will sometimes hit the main objective head on, in force..other times I may pretend to hit it in force, but have my main attack group try to outflank. I never hit bunkers unless I have to, instead I will try to isolate them. I will pull back units that hit yellow fatigue to rest just behind the front, or if I dont have enough, I will pull everything back a hex or two to rest.

I usually keep my attacking infantry in battalions.

I seem to only play campaigns, so I will send hurt units back to rest and refit. Usually takes about 20-30 turns to regain all fatigue, and end up at 70% strength, no matter how shot up you were. I try to never lose a unit permanently.

A good scenario to play to learn how to attack is any of the Normandy beach landings. Especially Omaha. You will become a master of the assault.

Usually it is fatigue that the defender cannot control, as his units are in constant fighting....so managing fatigue is a good way to defeat the enemy.

This is an excellent point. One good way to overwhelm a defense is to literally wear them out.
