RE: Help with Downloading Game Mods
Sorry, not sure which mods you want to get, there are quite a few around. Welcome back however, and I am sure someone will be able to point you to some of the specific downloads. VMs site, with links in the main Till Ops forum page, has some stuff. In general, most mods just get unzipped into the main game folder you are trying to apply to, and will put files in the correct sub-folders as needed.

RE: Help with Downloading Game Mods
I've had my copy of winrar for some time so things may have changed.

But I have a hazy recollection of picking it up at the winrar website.

There are several things that I like about it.

First, it feels like a much better engineered program than the zip program. I make, send, and receive a lot of zip files, and rarely do anything with rar files. But I use winrar for everything because it's easier to use than the zip program and, ironically, seems to do a better job of handling zip files than the zip program itself. Go figure.

Second, and I probably shouldn't talk about this in public, I'm still using a trial copy. The difference between the zip trial copy and winrar trial copy is that the zip trial copy eventually subjects you to a countdown timer and you have to sit around and wait for increasingly long times every time you use it. Winrar doesn't work that way, it just gives you a single pop-up message every time you use it. So the price for using a winrar trial copy is that you have to make one extra mouse click, but the price for using the zip trial copy is increasingly long and frustrating wait times (geared to how long and often you've used it).

So not only does winrar do a better job of handling zip files, but it's much less annoying to use.

RE: Help with Downloading Game Mods
If you haven't installed any mods into anything for a while there are a couple of things you should keep in mind until you get back into the swing of things.

Different people set up their mods differently, most don't self-install, and you wouldn't really want them to even if they did. The reason you don't really want them to self install is that you always need to know what you're getting yourself into when you use a mod. Sometimes a mod will change something by overwriting it that, on reflection, you'll realize that you didn't really want overwritten.

So it's a good idea, when you're about to start adding mods to something, to create a holding folder somewhere safe, and to unzip the mod into that empty folder. Then, when you open that folder up and look into it, you'll be able to figure out exactly what will get changed when you add the mod.

One thing that you should be aware of about mods (and this actually relates to the mechanics of how zip and rar files are made) is that sometimes a mod will be inside a folder of exactly the same name as the game it is going to mod. But sometimes it will be in a folder with an unrelated name. If you dump a mod like that into your game folder nothing will happen, because the mod will be inside a folder that the program won't look into because it doesn't know it exists. So one of the other benefits of always putting a mod into a safe holding area is that you can tell at a glance whether the mod mimics the folder name structure of the game it's going to modify.

History is a bad joke played by the living on the dead.

RE: Help with Downloading Game Mods
Use 7-Zip. It takes care of both ZIP and RAR files (and other compression formats)
