The Night Before Christmas
Twas the night before the Christmas offensive, and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even the Panzer Maus.
The ammo belts were slung by the firing ports with care,
Compliments of the Oberstleutnant from Panzer Lehr.
The Tigers were nestled all snug in their bay,
With hopes of a covering barrage to start a great day.
And Manteufel at the Command Center, and I at his side,
Had just braced ourselves for a long winter’s drive.
When on the radio there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my chair to see what was the matter.
Away to the Enigma machine I quickly slipped,
Tore open the cover and prepared to decrypt.
A pounding on the door gave us a surprise
As the door was thrown open before either could rise.
And what to our wondering eyes should appear
But Otto Skorzeny dressed as an American engineer.
With a wink of his eye, and informal salutes
He asked for our maps, with a click of his boots
There, there, and there, you’ve nothing to fear
The bridges are secured he said with jolly cheer.
Raising two fingers to the brim of his cap
Another salute he formally snapped
Out the door in a flash he sprang to his track
To his driver gave a nod, as in the distance an 88 cracked
And I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight
“Merry Christmas to all and to all a good fight”
A friend with way too much time on his hands sent me this.
