Allies - Romanian 4th Army

ARMATA A 4-A ROMÂNĂ
4th Romanian Army

Lieutnant General Gheorghe Avramescu

The 4th Army was the last of four armies fielded by Romania during World War 2. It participated in the later stages of the war on Eastern Front and was famous for recapturing Besarabia back in 1941, but it was destroyed in the Battle of Stalingrad, along with 3rd Army. It was beaten again afer Second Jassy-Kischinev offensive on 20th August 1944 and while covering Romanian’s lefternmost flank became the main fighting force facing Hungary after Romanian about-face. Thus it became first from Allied armies to intervene and mann the southern Transilvania front just few days later.
NOTE: Order of Battle straight after 2nd Jassy-Kischinev is a real mess (and turns veeery different in just under a week, from 19th to 24th August) and this army is reconstructed in this ORBAT roughly basing on what could be interpreted, it is most likely not entirely accurate.

CORPUL II ROMÂNĂ
Romanian II Corps

This unit was only one immediately available at the start of operations in Southern Transylvania. Shifted from destroyed 3rd Army, it encompassed only two divisions – the 7th and 18th – while the latter was still in proces of transit.
This Corps is more ad hoc than it might happen to look like. Thus it does not own any serious corps weapons support.

DIVIZIE 7 INFANTERIE ROMAN
7th Romanian Infantry Division

Brigadier General Agricola Filip

7th Infantry had a bad luck to be on the forefront of the righternmost part of the attack at Jassy. It suffered heavy losses and after about-face it was directed to the „calm” part of the country, the Southern Transilvania, together with reinforcements for refit. A week later it was caught as a first unit to blunt the initial Hungarian attack.
As pretty much any Romanian division after the side shift, it represented rather worse state than in 1941. It was short on artillery units and cuts on divisional cavalry units, with regimental cavalry companies long gone, same as infantry guns cuts.

DIVIZIE 18 INFANTERIE ROMAN
18th Romanian Infantry Division

Brigadier General Vasile Pascu

The 18th Infantry took much less of a beating – it was one of the first divsions sent towards Hungary with a general thought of possible combat operations in near future. When the fighting erupted, it was still in transit, however it promptly deployed and offered resistance, playing part in decent delay until the Soviets arrived.
As pretty much any Romanian division after the side shift, it represented rather worse state than in 1941. It was short on artillery units and cuts on divisional cavalry units, with regimental cavalry companies long gone, same as infantry guns cuts.

GRUPUL MATEI
Matei Armoured Detachment

Lieutnant Colonel Gheorgiu Matei

Matei Armoured Detachment is one of several formations left from once serious and important Divizie 1 Blindata, or simply 1st Romanian Armoured Division „Romana Mare” (Greater Romania) that fought alongside the Germans from 1941. It execited a spirited counterattack at Scobalteni just near Jassy two weeks earlier, where it destroyed an entire Soviet Tank Corps – one of very few successes of the Axis at the start of this offensive (this particular battle is covered in Scenario #863 in SPWW2). For this reason, after the about-face, „Romana Mare” was put down and split immediately with its officers persecuted with particularly great ferocity as pro-German elite. It however very soon become apparent that Romanian force fighting the Germans all over the country could get some punch. Thus two armoured detachments were promptly created from, hmmm, politically correct elements. The Niculescu Detachment fought around Bucharest and Ploesti, preventing Germans from destroying the oil fields. Matei Detachment on the other hand – organized as a task force – was sent to southern Transilvania as a mobile reserve of the redeploying 4th Army. They came just in time and soon found themselves in combat around Turda.
Note: Matei Detachment is considered a regiment when in doubt – it can be deployed as a whole.

BATALIONUJ FIX CLUJ
Static Battalion „Cluj”

Battalion „Cluj” was a static unit, comprised mostly of some border guard units, who’s first objective is to delay potential attacker. This battalion came first into contact with advancing Hungarians on 4th September, on the very eve of combat operations against Turda. It retreated quickly, but in good order, and soon joined their allies in Turda, attempting to steam the initial hungarian advance.

CORPUL V ROMÂNĂ
Romanian V Corps

This unit first to reach Transylvania along the Soviet 27th Army. No stronger than the Romanian units already fighting in the area, it served as a reserve for leading Soviet elements and used to exchange the combat weary II Corps later on.

DIVIZIA 2 MUNTE
2nd Mountain Infantry Division

Colonel Gheorghe Bartolomeu

The 2nd Mountain Division was in somewhat decent shape after the Second Jassy-Kischinev. If fought vallantly on the all major battlefields of Armeegruppe Sud. The unit saw persecutions after Soviet takeover, however Romanians badly needed experienced professionals on the Transilvanian front. Thus. The division finally was let loose and participated in the later stages of battle of Turda, later on proceeding towards Debrecen.
Note that Vanatori de Munte are organized into Groups (Grupul), a loose equivalent of a regiment, but with smaller core HQ and implemented decentralization.
