New Game  Shanley on Hill 30 Team Tournament
LT. COL. SHANLEY ON HILL 30 INVITATIONAL TEAM TOURNAMENT - RULES OF PLAY

Preface:

On the night of 5/6 June 1944, two regiments of the 82nd Airborne were to be dropped west of the Mederet River to secure a number of bridges and causeways across the flooded landscape to facilitate the breakout of the Americans from Utah. Things went horribly wrong with the airdrops scattering widely. Lt. Col. Shanley of the 508th PIR, 82nd Airborne managed to gather not more than two companies (from various regiments and even the 101st airborne) and with these was compelled to fall back to a secondary objective - blocking the German 91st Luftlande and supporting armour from crossing the causeway east from Le Port Filiolet. From this position they repeatedly faced German counter-attacks, the strongest and final of which occurred on the 9th of June.

Can you, as Lt. Col. Shanley hold off the German attacks?

Can you, as Oberleutnants Reimer and Bonnenkamp secure Le Port Filiolet?

Number of Players:

Participants will be organized into teams composed of three players each.

Player Roles:

Two of each team's players will assume the roles of the two German commanders, Oberleutnant Reimer and Oberleutnant Bonnenkamp, while the third player will assume the role of the American Lt. Col. Shanley.

Match-Ups:

The two German players will play co-operatively against an opposing team’s single American player and vice versa. Thus each ‘team’ will be engaged in two matches simultaneously while individual 'players' will be playing only one match.

Player to Team Assignment:

During the initial enrollment an effort will be made to assign players to teams and matches that:
  • Are able to submit a similar number of ‘turns per week’
  • Are in the same or nearest possible time zones
Scenario Size

The map is large and complicated by the St. Louis bocage and semi-darkness. Playing time is 2.5 hours to permit time for cautious maneuver. The actual battle was a day-long affair. For force sizes, see below.

How to Win:

Players will win or lose as a team rather than as individuals. The winning team will be the one achieving the highest total combined German plus American victory points from the team’s two matches.

A Refereed Game:

Play will be refereed by Kandu. All moves and player passwords will be sent to the opponent normally. Dropboxes and passwords will be shared with the referee so that he can from time to time and without causing delays to play check that:
  • the German players follow the German Orders Sequence (see below)
  • the German players remain within their assigned Areas of Operation (see below)
  • German player Oberleutnant Bonnenkamp follows the “Important Compulsory Special Rules” for “German Artillery”
How to Join:

Email Kandu at [email protected].

Provide the following information:
  • Your ‘The Blitz’ game name
  • Number of turns per day or week you can commit to
  • Your time zone
First Come First Enrolled:

Players will be enrolled on a first-come-first-enrolled basis using the time stamp indicated on my receipt of your email application. After posting, enrollment will be open until midnight July 30th.

Pre-Game Intel:

All players will receive a copy of the CMBN scenario WO Shanley on Hill 30 FINAL.btt. via DropBox. Players should open the scenario in the scenario editor and study the map and orders of battle including their and there opponents' units’ strengths and quality. Both sides may freely read the other side’s Mission.txt files and all players should carefully familiarize themselves with the “Important Compulsory Special Rules” for “German Artillery”, indeed Oberleutnant Bonnenkamp 'must' do the latter to be able to play following the rules.

Degree of Difficulty.

The opening player must set the game difficulty setting to ‘Iron’

Player Communication: Players of same and opposite sides may freely communicate with each other without going through the referee. The German players are deemed to be in radio contact and communication between opposing forces is deemed to be under a flag of truce.

Orders Sequence:

Prior to play the following Dropboxes need to be created:

Box 1: German Dropbox to be shared among the two German players and the referee.

Box 2: To be shared among between K.G. Reimer, his opponent Lt. Col. Shanley and the referee
In each round of play …

During set-up only: K.G. Bonnenkamp sets the game difficulty to IRON.

1. K.G. Bonnenkamp creates a team password to be shared with his team mate and the referee

During play:

1. K.G. Bonnenkamp completes all of its actions, SAVES the game using the SAVE function without pressing the GO button! and Dropboxes the saved game to his partner, K.G. Reimer.

2. K.G. Reimer completes its actions, saves the game using the GO button and Dropboxes his move to his opponent Lt. Col. Shanley.

3. The American player will create a password (first turn only), completes all of their actions, saves the game using the GO button and Dropboxes  it back to the German Drop Box.
4. The two German players can each watch the previous turn's results individually before Bonnenkamp makes his move.

RE: Shanley on Hill 30 Team Tournament
In case anyone is curious what its like to play in a Coop game - I have done a few and it adds a different element. You have off line conversations about how things are going and you have someone to talk to about the game. Someone who has a built in interest that is :-)

In CM its possible by one player on the side saving their turn in the orders phase (after giving their orders) and then making it available to your play partner who then completes there orders and generates the new turn.

RE: Shanley on Hill 30 Team Tournament
Lt. Col. Shanley on Hill 30 update:
I will leave the invitation open for two weeks, i.e. until the end of Thursday August 12th. So far have immediately received two interested players. Hoping for four more to start the first H2H team games.

A copy of the scenario and printable maps will be emailed to players after we set up the team Dropboxes. Anyone interested can already d/l the scenario from the FGM Scenario Depot. Feel free to open it up in the editor and explore your options. Nothing is secret to ensure that the game is fair to all.
