Aachen - West Wall Battle

RE: Aachen - West Wall Battle
I was trying to save the smoke because I presume I'll be running into a lot of bad guys after I break through.

Good idea on the airstrikes, but I was also saving them for any German tanks I'd run into on the other side.

I need more. Lots more. *laughs*

The CS air strikes are incredibly random, often hilarious, especially when they decide to take out the empty wagons next to the Tigers...lol...

Still...and "still" is a key here...

If you set an airstrike on a hex that is occupied, and that unit remains in place (I.E., "wall defenders") the airstrike has a fair to middling chance of hitting what you aimed at.  Still not perfect, but it does help.

Jason needs no help from the likes of me...this is for those following along...and of course old grognards talking tactics...

We are making excellent progress, although it's a bloody mess. I still keep running into small ambushes with anti-tank guns. Some of those Pantherturms and 75mm anti-tank guns are absolutely brutal. On the bright side, I have punched through the Scharnhorst line in 4 different spots now. Some are more successful than others, but it is nice to see some progress, considering we are nearly a third of the way through the scenario. This is a challenging but fun scenario, I'd recommend it if you're looking for some hours to burn!

This makes me wonder if it's a trap, but I'm going to push through anyway and hope to avoid the additional Pantherturm's I keep running across. I also two additional locations where I'm trying to cross, although this is turning ugly indeed due to the German artillery. I've noticed that Hetzer's are nearly impossible to kill, that's a struggle to figure out the best course of action for those. Onward into the valley of death!

You ever sleep Jason just finished playing someone not to far from where you live in the wilds of Canada MKP.

You had me laughing at that one Nort.

Let's face it...unless you were in a Thunderbolt/Ju-87/Il-2m/Typhoon...pilots HATED ground attack...'cause it's a GREAT way to get shot down.  The USAAF even considered awarding kills on air to ground attacks.  I don't think it happened, but the "real" pilots were understandably reticent and required some serious motivation to go down into the weeds.

So...in a bizarre sort of way...the game accurately reflects this...
Or, have the creators of this magnificent CS mess been proven prophetic yet once again?

RE: Aachen - West Wall Battle
I have returned from the vacation and I am back in action! We went over the latest UPDATE news and showed off the PUBLIC BETA's. After we dove back into the AACHEN West Wall scenario to see where I left off and what kind of attacks needed to be formulated. Clearly I had forgotten mostly what I was doing, but we were back on track. I started the assault into Aachen proper and we're taking over some blocks. It will be a nasty affair, but a good fight indeed. We didn't cover the whole turn this session, as the BETA's took some time, but we are making good progress! It's good to be back!

RE: Aachen - West Wall Battle
We took a minute to get everyone caught up to speed on the Campaign Series Middle East and Vietnam UPDATES and then we dove right into the senseless violence of Aachen. At this rate it is taking a bit longer to do the turns, but I am also taking the time to explain some of the thoughts and tactics I'm using as I continue to play. Of course, if you have questions, feel free to ask them and I am always happy to answer! This scenario is getting more intense as I am seeing tanks coming to the front and the counter-attacks are starting to form up. Alas, I did make a few mistakes near the end of the session... boo for bloody lessons.

RE: Aachen - West Wall Battle
We spent the first half hour going over the first couple day results of the survey that was posted over on cslegion.com If you haven't filed it out, I highly recommend doing so, as we do take the answers into account as we design the games! After that we returned to Aachen for some intense city fighting and fighting on the southern portion of the map, for a couple turns. In most cases the German artillery was off, but damn, in the south - it was atrocious. On the bright side, progress is being made in the city.
