Modifying scenarios - stepping on toes?
Hello everyone, I have a concern and a question or two.

On the subject of modifying scenarios, is it considered bad form to mod the scenario of a blitz forum member? I mean, even if we ask permission beforehand, how is this viewed by the club? My impression is that this is frowned upon, and I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings.

The vast majority of scens are great, but some are designed for play vs. the computer and would make great pbem scenarios, while others need to be revised due to balance issues. I had intended to give the original scenario designer credit for the scen of course, but I'm not going down the path of revising scenarios if it's just going to make me unpopular around these parts.

And a question - what is the modified complexity level? I take it this is not the same as the complexity level as determined by the game's program (which has to do with the # of units). I ask becuae I'll need to know this if I submit any scenarios.

Ok, Huib seems to feel this is a no-no. Duly noted.

But there has to be more than one opinion!

Speaking of which, here's mine - If I were to create and post a scen, and someone modified it at a later time, I would not have a problem IF

a. I was given credit for the original scen in the scenario description (i.e. scenario designer: John Given / Joe soandso)

b. All comments such as "the original scenaio was horribly designed by the original author" are left out of the new scenario description (if changed) and

c. the new scenario had a version number (i.e. The Attack at Where-Ever ver. 1.1)

But I realize some folks might be more thin skinned about the matter. I need more input on this folks, since no doubt there are other forum members wondering about this? :conf:

The problem is two fold.............first after a while there are more than a few versions of the same scenario.

second problem is;it is akin to repainting someones art.........it's ok to dislike the art.....but best to leave it to the artist....just my 2 pennies

also the reasons I do not release my .scn files

I would have to agree with Huib and von Earlmann.

I wouldn't have an issue if one was to create their own scenario recreating the battle in question.

In my opinion it would be better to send your comments directly to the scenario designer and it is up to him whether to include your comments or not. On the other hand you can always ask designer if he has no objections about you doing that.

On the other hand, your opinion about scenario maybe just opposite to others' opinions... I have played several scenarios that were judged unbalanced or not entertaining, but I gave it a try and they were very godd. Very good in my opinion, of course... :smoke:

There is different story about some scenarios designed for playing against AI (lots of fixed units, etc.) I'm not sure what to do with those ones. You can always design your own scenario describing that specific battle.

Alrighty! :)

Several have spoken (thanks for the opinons fellas) and the general consensus seems to be that if you feel strongly enough about a battle that it needs your own personal touch, then create your own scenario from scratch (map and everything). I've decided, based on the opinions above, to "live and let live" when it comes to the "art" as it were, of the blitz members ,and not revise any scenarios.

Von Earlmann, when you say you don't release your .scn files, how is anyone supposed to see all your hard work (and play it)?

I also feel compelled to chime in.

I would never alter someone else's work, without their permission or working in collaboration with them.

Von Earlman makes a GREAT point as well about multiple versions being out there. I shudder to think about modified scene, org, or map files floating about like a virus, waiting to infect the unsuspecting players WF folder; or players unwittingly getting into an altered game that they think is the original.

To Jason's point: for those interested in tweaking, the time would be better spent DESIGNING. We need all the designers we can get. And they shouldn't hesitate to do new, better treatments on battles that may have been covered in the past
