"Record game" button

Hi everyone, I have noticed that there is an option to record the game, but I have never activated this command, nor am I sure what would happen exactly. :chin:

In my days of playing Age Of Empires / Age of Kings, recording a game would allow for a later playback of the entire scenario (it played a replay basically, which could be over two hours long in some cases). :zzz:

But does anyone know what it does in the campaign series? I'm interested in perhaps using it if it truly does allow for some kind of a playback / replay, but if it just creates a numerical file for study by those who are into statistical stuff, I'd rather not bother.
