Automatic or Manual Defensive Fire?

In the Panzer campaign series and some other modern series I like Automatic Fire.

However in The Civil War campaigns and earlier I prefer Manual Defensive Fire. I used to play with both active in these games but would like some input. I'm definitely against Automatic Fire in the Pre-20th Century games.

For ACW always manual. I'm no expert but I personally think there is a bug in the Auto fire for Civil War.
It seems when in automatic fire, if the AI takes any type of fire, it will stop all movement.
This makes for extremely disjointed attacks by the AI. 
PC, SB and PB always automatic.
