The Prussians chose to retreat at Jena and so a lot of French units were not employed. They decided to fight at Auerstadt and that didn't work out so well....a number of Prussians stayed in the centre and were not engaged in either battle.This gave the French a chance to gain points with objectives and the destruction of Prussian cavalry screens.
