The Russians have a number of advantages here: they start on a Major Win; excellent defensive terrain; and a lot of artillery. The French have a quality advantage. The Russian shooting was poor due to crappy gunpowder, and unlucky in some melees. That and they concentrated in the wrong places.
The French have high quality infantry and a large number of high quality cavalry. They have to keep their forces together and not get bogged down in the south or get diverted. Don't have ADD on this one. It seems like a lot time with 72 turns, but having to advance from the edge of the map takes pretty long, the tail end of the French army didn't get near the action until around turn 60. This win was a combination of luck and timing, the Russians happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. This one could have easily have been a loss instead of a victory.
