Panthers, getting stuck in the mud, and buildings like bunkers are three major obstacles working against the Americans. I'd might add that the American infantry is not the best mixture. The Americans do not have enough assault teams to take the town but do have a plethora of M1919-A4 teams which are better employed at a distance - not in close house to house fighting. I felt this was a shortcoming in the American infantry composition. My artillery did not necessarily fall the way I wanted it to, and that was a disappointment especially since it took quite some time to take out the German anti-aircraft gun in the center of the town. The arrival of the German Panther reinforcements surprised me (I did not know the Germans received reinforcements), and tipped the battle in favor of the Germans. Up until that point, the Americans had been doing well and most of the German tanks had been taken out with a few American tanks also being lost. At the end of the battle, I had three tanks immobilized in the mud. I also lost three tanks because they either became immobilized or bogged when they were destroyed (one was in the process of outflanking a Panther when it became stuck making it vulnerable to the Panther). The houses being like bunkers also made the Americans' progress even harder. I put nearly 15 mortar shells on the roof of one two story house and did they do any damage at all? No...despite the fact there was a German team on the second floor! Attrition of the German infantry helped the Americans, but in the end the Americans were a spent force holding the southern side of the town and the battle went in favor of the Germans who had only one tank with a working gun left. It was a fun scenario though I might have rejected the assignment if I knew what I was facing beforehand. I thank my opponent for the game. He was a dogged opponent.
