There will be many ghosts haunting Grosshau for years to come.
I started the scenario thinking I was doomed. It started out real slow but built up to about the 30-20 minute mark when it got real ugly!
The stone buildings in Grosshau are literally fortresses.
To win, you must be careful with what you have and look for opportunities where your opponent has opened himself up. Don't squander your armor or your infantry.
Watch your ammo supply and don't waste it entirely on softening up your opponent.
Use smoke and suppression fire cover your advance.
The SS in Grosshau are tough and won't surrender easily. I had to burn a lot of them out with my flamethrower tanks. There were many crispy critters in Grosshau when the day was done.
The German field guns were deadly. I had a house of death where a whole squad was wiped out with a few cannon shots. My opponent placed them well, in such a way that they were hard to target. Make sure you save your mortars for them. He used one field gun to destroy a building in order to give himself a better field of fire! He also kept one field gun out of action until midway in the battle which caught me off guard (I thought there were only three but to my surprise there was a fourth).
My opponent also carefully placed his troops well. They constantly hid and then reappeared. Those troops required constant suppression fire in order to close in.
I am not sure if his artillery strike at the start of the game was intentional or not. Either I killed his spotter early on, or he ordered a barrage thinking I was going to rush the section of the town closest to my lines (which I did not do) initially. I was lucky not to feel the wrath of his off board artillery.
In the end, I exploited weaknesses in his defenses and brought my men into position which allowed me to coordinate my assault on the fortress. These factors allowed me to pull off a victory.
