French valiant defence crumbled in the centre, cutting the front line in two. The northern cavalry thrust to outflank the advancing enemy was thwarted, the hills in the south penetrated by the OHL probes, pockets of defence being formed and wiped out as they went. The flank wasn't turned, the whole line was rather pierced in the centre on the lower ground.
