Punching through - The Matrix Games version of West Front

Location : 8 km west of Kleef On the 8th of February, the British XXX Corps started it's attack on the German positions between the Rhine and Maas rivers. Operation 'Veritable' was aimed at penetrating the the West Wall defences and capture the cities of Goch and Kleef. It also had to draw off any enemy armour from the south as the US forces were to launch their own attack. XXX Corps had given the 15th (Scottish) orders that were simple to understand, but hard to execute : capture Kleef. The positions in front of the city were held by 1051st Grenadier Regiment of 84th Infanterie Division. The lead element of the division, 227th Infantry Brigade was supported by elements of 6th Guards Armoured Brigade and the specialised armour of 79th Armoured Division. They could also count on the fire support of their own division and the medium regiment sof XXX Corps. They would need it because they were facing a well entrenched enemy in fortified positions and covered by extensive minefields.
