July 1st, 1863 9:00am 35 Turns {historical A/I} Confederate Maj. Gen. Henry Heth, granted permission by Lt. Gen. A.P. Hill to retrieve a reported stockpile of shoes in Gettysburg, ordered two of his brigades, those of Archer and Davis, to march to the town. His other two brigades, those of Pettigrew and Brockenbrough, were to follow in reserve. In his way stood Maj. Gen. John Buford who, alerted by his scouts that the Rebels were converging on the town, decided to deploy his lightly armed cavalrymen to fight a delaying action. Knowing that the hills southeast of Gettysburg would be an ideal defensive position for the Union Army, he wished to deny them to the Confederates as long as possible.
