July 2nd, 1863 3:40pm 16 Turns {historical A/I} Lee's plan for the 2nd was a bold attempt at double envelopment. Ewell's Corps was to assault Culp's Hill on the Union right, while Longstreet's was to march south, unseen by the enemy, then wheel about and attack up the Emmitsburg Road against the Union left flank. However, it took Longstreet's men hours to get into position, and Longstreet himself disagreed completely with the whole idea. As for Gen. Meade, his plan was simple: defend on interior lines, and hold his ground until all of his forces arrived. Unfortunately for the Union commander, Gen. Sickles had taken it upon himself to move his III Corps forward from its assigned position along Cemetery Ridge, thereby leaving it badly exposed.
