July 2nd, 1863 7:00pm 6 Turns Lee's battle plan for Ewell on July 2 was to have him create a diversion on the Union right to prevent the Federals from reinforcing their left flank at Little Round Top, which Longstreet's two divisions were to assault at 4pm. Ewell in turn decided to have Johnson's division attack Culp's Hill, but the terrain slowed his advance and his attack did not begin until after 7 o'clock. By that time Meade had ordered units from around Culp's Hill to reinforce Little Round Top, so when Johnson's assault began there were few defenders - and many unmanned breastworks - on Culp's Hill. But disaster was averted by the coming of darkness, the timely arrival of reinforcements, and the steadfastness of Union Brig. Gen. Greene, who was determined to make the Rebels pay dearly for his breastworks.
