July 3rd, 1863 4:00am 20 Turns With reinforcements in hand, Johnson prepared to renew his assault on Culp's Hill at first light. Meanwhile, the commander of the Union XII Corps' 1st Division, Brig. Gen. Williams, whose trenches Johnson's men had occupied the night before, was eager to recapture them and made ready to do so at daybreak. Both sides attacked at the same time and fought at close range in the thickly wooded, rocky terrain. After the failure of the initial Confederate assault, the battle devolved into a series of small-unit encounters with nearly continuous firing on both sides. Around 11am, stiff resistance and a steady stream of reinforcements on the Federal side finally convinced Johnson, his division now in tatters, to call off his attack.
