April 5-6, 1862 78 Turns ----------------------[ What If ]---------------------- 12 Noon, 5 April: Originally, the Confederate attack on Ulysses S. Grant's unsuspecting and ill-prepared Federal army was to have taken place on Friday, April 4th. However, General Hardee, whose corps was slated to lead the attack, did not get his marching orders on time, and the assault was put off until April 5th. By noon on Saturday, most of the Confederate units were in place -- but now General Ruggles' division, slated to be in the second wave of the assault, could not be located! General Bragg, Ruggles' Corps commander, refused to attack without all of his units present. By the time Ruggles' division had been "found" and taken its position, it was 4 PM Enraged, Johnston had to postpone the attack yet again, thus allowing General Buell and his Army of the Ohio to reinforce Grant late on April 6th. What if the assault had gone off on Saturday afternoon all? Can Grant hold out? And just when will Lew Wallace's division arrive from Crump's Landing?
