April 6-7, 1862 91 Turns ---------------------[ Historical ]--------------------- ** The Full two-day Campaign ** 6 AM, 6 April: Joseph E. Johnston's untested, but eager, Army of the Mississippi silently approaches the mostly unsuspecting, and quietly sleeping, Union Army of the Tennessee under Ulysses S. Grant. For several days Union scouts have reported sporadic contact with "stray" Confederates, but Grant dismissed these warnings, confident that the Rebels would not attack his army in its camp. Meanwhile, Don Carlos Buell's Federal Army of the Ohio is approaching from Savannah, nine miles downstream from Pittsburg Landing, where Grant's army is encamped. Buell's vanguard units are expected to begin arriving in about 12 hours; in the meantime Grant is under orders not to risk a general engagement. J.E. Johnston, however, has decided the time is ripe to drive Grant's unsuspecting Federals into the Tennessee River -- before Buell arrives. A two-day delay in getting the surprise attack launched may have been costly. The bloody battle of Shiloh, along the steep banks of the sluggish Tennessee River, is about to unfold.
