April 6-7, 1862 85 Turns -----------------------[ What If ]----------------------- 8 AM, 6 April: Albert Sydney Johnston originally planned to have each of his corps attack in a "column of divisions", but yielded to Beauregard's more complicated plan featuring each corp stacked up one behind the other in a "column of corps". As the battle progressed, the lines came together, and the inexperienced units of the various corps got hopelessly intermingled, causing organizational nightmares. What if Johnston had stuck to his original plan, with corps attacking on a smaller and more command-efficient front? This scenario also assumes that Col. Peabody of Prentiss' 6th Division did not send out a morning reconnaissance patrol toward Seay Field. Instead, the Confederates have approached the Union camps virtually unnoticed, and have just now made contact with the picket lines of the southern-most Union divisions. In the Federal camps the "long roll" is sounding on the drums, calling the men to assemble. Needless to say, there is a bit of confusion... To the north, General Grant has wisely instructed Lew Wallace exactly which road to take on his way to Pittsburg Landing. He should be arriving a little sooner ...but only time will tell.
