April 6, 1862 21 Turns ---------------------[ Historical ]--------------------- 10:00 AM: About 10 a.m. Sherman's troops were forced to abandon their camps, falling back in disarray. Sherman tried desperately to rally what he could, but almost half of his division had already disintegrated. Meanwhile, General John McClernand's 1st Division had arrived; the brigades of Carroll Marsh and Abraham Hare fell into line along the Purdy Road north of the Review Field. James Veatch's brigade of Illinois and Indiana infantry (Hurlbut's division) took up a position to their rear. They had little time to prepare, however, for Confederates of Shaver's and Stewart's brigades were already approaching. Further west, the regiments of Patton Anderson, Bushrod Johnson, S.A.M. Wood and Robert Russell are reorganizing after putting Raith's brigade to flight.
