April 6, 1862 27 Turns ---------------------[ Historical ]--------------------- 11:00 AM: The battle raged bitterly for several hours, with much blood spilled on both sides. When Prentiss' 6th Division was routed from its camps around 10 AM, most of the famished Confederate attackers, many of whom had not eaten for more than a day, paused to gorge themselves on left-over Yankee rations. The respite was a godsend for the Federals, however, allowing them a chance to establish a defensive line. General Prentiss managed to gather about 1000 men from his shattered division and formed a new line along an old, slightly-sunken wagon road near a peach orchard. Generals Hurlbut and W.H.L. Wallace brought up fresh troops and reinforced his flanks ...and awaited another onslaught by the victory-starved Rebels. Meanwhile, on the Federal right, Sherman's division has "Seen the Elephant". Having abandoned their camps and fallen back from its first line of defense, Sherman has tried desperately to rally his disorganized troops to form a second line along the Purdy-Hamburg Road.
