April 6, 1862 9 Turns ---------------------[ Historical ]--------------------- 12 Noon: Late in the morning Benjamin F. Cheatham's 2nd Brigade (minus the 20th Tennessee), advanced across Duncan field toward the newly consolidated Federal line formed along a slightly sunken road. After advancing halfway across Duncan field unmolested, the waiting Federals opened fire, repulsing the Rebels with terrible loss. Shortly thereafter, Braxton Bragg entered Barnes field and found Randell Lee Gibson's brigade standing by idly, awaiting orders. Irritated, Bragg ordered Gibson's relatively unbloodied Louisianans to attack. Before they could get under way however, the brigade was thrown into confusion when one of the Cheatham's shattered Tennessee regiments mistook Gibson's 19th Louisiana for the enemy and opened fire, killing and wounding just over a hundred men. Nevertheless, when the order came at noon to advance they did. Meanwhile, to the east, the Union left is about to be severely tested as four Confederate brigades approach Stuart's and McArthur's regiments.
