April 6, 1862 10 Turns ---------------------[ Historical ]--------------------- 5:20 PM: As far as memorable days go, this one had been one that General Grant would rather forget. The Union army had been completely surprised by the dawn attack, and routed from their camps. Despite heroic defensive stands throughout the day by many units, just as many had disintegrated at the first shot. After many bloody repulses, the "Hornet's Nest" had finally fallen to the Rebels, and with it several thousand boys in blue. A "final" Federal defensive line had now been formed around Pittsburg Landing -- but one literally bristling with artillery. If this line were to break, the day would truly be lost. On the other side, at General Bragg's insistance, the exhausted Confederates steeled themselves for one final push. The brigades of Chalmers and Jackson formed up for yet another attack, even though many of their men were low on, or out of, ammunition. Between the two lines lay a deep ravine. It would not be an easy assault.
