April 7, 1862 28 Turns ---------------------[ Historical ]--------------------- 8:40 AM: The stormy night of 6-7 April found the Confederates in possession of most of the battlefield ...and both sides thoroughly exhausted. The Confederates, believing they'd won a decisive victory, went to sleep confident of finishing off Grant's demoralized army in the morning. Thus little effort was made that night to resupply and reorganize Beauregard's troops; most simply fell fast asleep where they last fought. Unbeknownst to all, however, Cheatham's division, minus the 7th Kentucky, had withdrawn to their campground of the previous night. At daybreak, however, the Rebels awoke to find a fresh host of Yankees: Buell's Army of the Ohio had arrived in force! Even though skirmishing across Jones Field and Wicker Field began about daybreak, it was not until after 8 a.m. that Buell's troops began a general advance.
