December 7, 1862 18 Turns ---------------------[ Historical ]-------------------- 12 Noon: In late 1862, a Confederate force led by General Thomas Hindman marched into northwest Arkansas, hoping to reclaim the area from the Federal occupiers. In an attempt to outflank the Union army of General James Blunt (commanding in the absence of John Schofield), Hindman marched his tired and hungry troops toward Fayetteville on the morning of December 7th. Near the Illinois River, however, his cavalry screen ran into the advance elements of General Francis Herron's Union force, which had made a forced march from Missouri in order to come to Blunt's aid. As Hindman's army formed a battle line on the ridge overlooking the Illinois River valley, Blunt raced back from his position near Cane Hill to join forces with Herron. This scenario opens with Confederate reinforcements arriving just as the first serious Union attack begins ...and with Blunt's troops not far from the battlefield.
