Major John Chivington commanding a force of 190 cavalry and 230
infantry set off from Ft. Union as an advance with the purpose
of recapturing Santa Fe from a small Confederate force. On March
26, 1862 he bumped into 310 advance troops under Majors Pyron
and Shropshire on their way to take the Federal arsenal at Ft.
Union.
