01. September 14, 1862 38 Turns ------------------[ Historical ]---------------- 8am: Robert E. Lee was concerned that Union control of the passes over South Mountain would threaten his supply train and enable the Federals to relieve their beleaguered garrison at Harpers Ferry. On September 13th he directed D.H. Hill to guard Turner's Gap, and ordered Longstreet to march from Hagerstown to support Hill. Early on the morning of September 14th, Gen. Pleasonton's Union cavalry, reconnoitering the position of the enemy, discovered Rebels occupying the crests of South Mountain around Turner's Gap. At about 8 AM, Cox's division of Reno's IX Corps, in cooperation with Pleasonton's reconnaissance, moved up the mountain along the Old Sharpsburg Road toward Fox's Gap. Quickly, D.H. Hill sent a brigade to check this Union maneuver and called for the remainder of his division to reinforce his position. Meanwhile, marching hard from the east came the remainder of the Union IX Corps and the whole of Hooker's I Corps. Would the weight of these two Union corps break the thinly spread defenses of the Confederates guarding the passes through South Mountain?
