September 14, 1862 10 Turns ------------------[ Historical ]---------------- 9am: On the morning of September 14th, Brig. General Daniel H. Hill, commanding a division in Jackson's II Corps, stood quietly near the Mountain House at Turner's Gap observing the Federal deployment in the valley to the east. What he saw unsettled him. The Federals were on the move, advancing south and west toward Fox's Gap. Knowing that the Army of Northern Virginia's supply train was at risk and that crossing the mountain at this pass would allow the enemy to relieve the garrison at Harpers Ferry, he directed Brig. General Samuel Garland's brigade and a battery of four guns to secure the pass and hold it at all costs. Garland rushed his brigade south to the junction of the Old Sharpsburg and Wood roads where he found a lone cavalry regiment and a battery of horse artillery from J.E.B. Stuart's command. Meanwhile, Brig. General Jacob Cox, the Federal commander in charge of probing Fox's Gap, was leading his Kanawha Division of the IX Corps up the east side of South Mountain toward Fox's Gap. With this formidable force he outnumbered the Confederates nearly four to one.
