September 14, 1862 10 Turns ------------------[ Historical ]------------------ 4pm: During the morning, Brig. General Jacob Cox had led his Kanawha Division against the Confederates at Fox's Gap. By noon, the Federal advance had stalled along the Wood Road south of the Wise Farm, leaving the exhausted Confederates in control of the Old Sharpsburg Road west of the farm. Shortly after noon, while Rebel batteries hampered the Federal IX Corps' deployment along the east side of South Mountain, Confederate General D.H. Hill began moving in reinforcements to relieve Garland's command around the Wise Farm. Meanwhile, on the east side of the mountain, the Union IX Corps' commander, Maj. General Jesse Reno, replaced Cox's tired division with Willcox's and Sturgis' divisions. Finally, around mid-afternoon, General Willcox's division was given the nod to resume the contest for Fox's Gap - and the boys in blue began their ascent.
