September 14, 1862 10 Turns ------------------[ Historical ]---------------- 5:20pm: During the afternoon, the leading elements of Major General Joseph Hooker's I Corps began filing north off the National Turnpike onto the Old Hagerstown Road. Hooker was under orders from McClellan to attack the eminence to the north of Turner's Gap, while Jesse Reno's IX Corps made another attempt to drive the Confederates off the mountain near Fox's Gap. To the west, D.H. Hill watched apprehensively as I Corps worked its way north in an attempt to turn the Confederates' left. Acting quickly, Hill ordered General Robert Rodes' brigade to counter this maneuver. With his line of defense covering a front of nearly 3500 feet, and severely outnumbered, General Rodes was asked to delay the Yankees until elements from Longstreet's command could come up.
