September 17, 1862 45 Turns -------------------[ What If ]--------------------- 5am: McClellan had been decapitated by a well-aimed 12 lb. solid shot three days previous while witnessing the action at Turner's Gap. While most Union troops were still mourning his loss, "Fightin' Joe" Hooker assumed command of the Army of the Potomac. It is now daybreak of the 17th, and three Union corps are fully deployed on the western side of the Antietam, poised to attack. Can Hooker succeed where McClellan failed, and bag Lee's Army of Northern Virginia? Was it misfortune - or fortune - that put an early end to "Little Mac's" career?
