September 17, 1862 9 Turns ------------------[ Historical ]------------------ 9am: The initial Federal assault on the Confederate left near Dunker Chuch had been repulsed by Jackson's now-weary troops, and the two mauled Federal corps had withdrawn into the North and East Woods. The Rebel ranks, however, had also been decimated. The field of battle became almost silent. Then into the corpse-strewn Cornfield advanced the lead division of Edwin Sumner's II Corps, in full parade-ground splendor. These troops, under the command of John Sedgwick, had as their objective the expanse of wooded terrain now known as the West Woods. From there the division was to "wheel left" and advance to the south, toward Sharpsburg and victory. However, Sedgwick had been sent into the field with no knowledge of the enemy's dispositions...
