Franklin's VI Corps arrived at the Antietam battlefield in time to cover the withdrawal of Sedgwick's mauled division as it fell back from the West Woods. Edwin Sumner, the senior commander on the field, was convinced the Rebels could not be dislodged from the West Woods, and forbade Franklin to renew the attack. What if Franklin's corps had instead been sent to aid Burnside's IX Corps in its attempt to storm the Rohrbach Bridge and turn the Confederate right? Can the "Lower Bridge" be taken and Sharpsburg invested before A.P. Hill's division arrives?
