July 18, 1861 11 Turns ------------------[ Historical ]---------------- 12:40pm: On the morning of July 18, 1861, McDowell's lead division under Brig. Gen. Daniel Tyler entered the quiet crossroads hamlet of Centreville. Tyler was under orders to observe the roads to Bull Run and Warrenton. Furthermore, he was to keep up the impression that McDowell was moving on Manassas, but not to bring on an engagement in the process. Convinced that he was hot on the heels of the retreating Confederates and operating within the context of McDowell's orders, Tyler decided to press forward and, accompanied by the commander of his lead brigade, Col. Israel Richardson, made a reconnaissance south of Centreville. They soon found themselves overlooking the strong position of the enemy at Mitchell's and Blackburn's Fords along Bull Run. Determined to ascertain the extent of that force and the position of the enemy batteries, Tyler ordered up two rifled guns and Richardson's entire brigade. After probing fire from the guns failed to provoke the rebels into revealing their strength, Tyler decided to exploit what he felt was the weaker of the two enemy positions: Blackburn's Ford. For this task he unleashed Richardson's brigade while ordering Col. William T. Sherman's brigade up in reserve, to be ready for any circumstance that might unfold. Opposing them, Confederate Brig. Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard had positioned Brig. Gen. James Longstreet's brigade to defend Blackburn's Ford; while to the southwest at Mitchell's Ford stood ready his largest brigade, that of Brig. Gen. Bonham. In reserve was the brigade of Col. Jubal Early. This represented the center of the Confederate Army, and Tyler's movement against it was exactly what Beauregard had anticipated.
