July 21, 1861 28 Turns ------------------[ What If ]---------------- 7:00am: P.G.T. Beauregard had a flanking maneuver of his own planned for July 21. Informants had told him that the bulk of McDowell's army was concentrated along the Warrenton Turnpike between Centreville and the Stone Bridge, which led him to surmise that his weakly guarded left flank was McDowell's likely target. The Creole's plan to relieve his left was to attack with his right and center. So, with Johnston's approval, he dispatched orders and set the wheels in motion for a morning attack on the Federal left flank. Unfortunately for the Confederates, his orders were unclear - and in one instance, undeliverable. As a result the attack was not properly coordinated between his brigade commanders, and the attempt to pressure the Federal left was aborted. What if Ewell had received the orders, and Beauregard had clearly provided a time and objective for each brigade commander to coordinate on? With variable release and entry times, will the Confederate brigade commanders coordinate any better this time?
