July 21, 1861 8 Turns ------------------[ Historical ]---------------- 10:20am: During the morning hours of July 21, a Confederate signal station spotted the reflection of the morning sun emanating from the bayonets and musket barrels of McDowell's flanking column as it worked its way south toward the vulnerable Confederate left flank. First to be notified of this impending danger was Colonel Nathan "Shanks" Evans, who quickly marched to impede the enemy's progress long enough for help to arrive. Meanwhile, McDowell's flanking column, led by Hunter's division, was several hours behind schedule when it finally crossed at Sudley Springs Ford around 9:30am. After a brief halt, Hunter ordered Burnside's Brigade southward along the Manassas-Sudley Road in hopes of striking before the Confederates could assemble any considerable force to oppose him.
