July 21, 1861 11 Turns ------------------[ Historical ]---------------- 2:00pm: Brigadier General Thomas J. Jackson's Virginia brigade arrived on Henry Hill as the morning contest for Matthew's Hill was ending in defeat for the Confederates. As the broken remnants streamed back to Henry Hill, Jackson calmly went about deploying his brigade in preparation of the anticipated Yankee onslaught. Although roused by the first taste of victory, it took McDowell roughly two hours to prepare for an advance on Henry Hill. The delay cost him the momentum from his morning gains and allowed the Confederates to rally their disorganized fragments behind Jackson's line. Finally, around 2pm, McDowell ordered the advance. Subscribing to Napoleonic tactics, he first ordered artillery forward to mass at close quarters. With little infantry support, two Federal batteries took a position northwest of the Widow Henry's house and began the contest for Henry Hill.
