August 29, 1862 10 Turns ------------------[ Historical ]----------------- 1:40pm: Shortly after arriving on the field of battle, Hooker's fresh division was sent toward Groveton Woods and ordered by General Pope to make a frontal attack on Jackson's line. Expressing dismay at the prospects of success of such an attack, Hooker requested that Kearny's division be allowed to assault the Rebel left concurrently. Like most other suggestions that day, Pope chose to ignore it. Shortly before 2pm, Joseph Carr orders two of his New Jersey regiments forward to probe the defense. Meanwhile, while dutifully leading his brigade forward behind Carr, Brig. Gen. Grover, commander of Hooker's 1st brigade, met with Robert Milroy whose brigade had previously assailed the Rebel lines in Groveton woods. Hearing that Grover had been ordered to launch another attack in the same vicinity, Milroy told Grover his only chance for success was to "go forward with fixed bayonets and loaded guns". After waiting in vain for promised support, Grover sends in his brigade shortly after 3pm.
