August 29, 1862 10 Turns ------------------[ Historical ]----------------- 4:00pm: By midafternoon the Confederate defenders on the left side of Jackson's defensive line along the unfinished railroad's embankments and excavations had already weathered numerous Federal assaults. Perhaps the most serious attack - and most recent - was when Cuvier Grover's brigade managed to break through, routing Thomas' brigade of Georgians. No support arrived to exploit the breach, however, and Pender's brigade, with help from Gregg's 14th South Carolina, quickly sealed the rupture. Waiting impatiently behind the front since arriving, James Nagle's three-regiment brigade is ordered to attack next, to be supported by Taylor's brigade from the Empire State. Meanwhile, sensing that Jackson's left might be vulnerable after already sustaining several heavy attacks, Pope orders Philip Kearny to use his division to again attack Gregg's weary South Carolinians. All the while John Pope is expecting Porter's V Corps to appear on the field from the south at any minute for the coup de grace; unfortunately for Pope, Porter is nowhere near. To Jackson's weary men, the day is fast becoming an endurance test of enormous proportions.
