August 30, 1862 4 Turns ------------------[ Historical ]----------------- 3:00pm: Shortly after three in the afternoon Fitz John Porter set in motion what would ultimately be the final Federal attack against Jackson's much-bloodied but ever-resilient defensive line. General Longstreet described the assault as "a grand display of a well organized attack, thoroughly concentrated and operating cleverly." This massed assault would fall on a relatively untested portion of the Confederate line near "The Deep Cut" and "The Dump", two sections of the unfinished railroad where the raised roadbed ended abruptly. It was during this attack that, after running out of ammunition, some Louisiana troops resorted to hurling rocks at their foe on the opposite side of the embankment - "an unlooked for variation in the proceedings", as one Yankee later put it.
