August 30, 1862 15 Turns ------------------[ Historical ]----------------- 3:40pm: For the past two days Pope has been obsessed with breaching "Stonewall" Jackson's line along "The Unfinished Railroad", all the while making little of warnings of a large enemy presence opposite his left flank. The latest, and perhaps most determined, Federal attack has just occurred, this being Fitz John Porter's attempt to break the Confederate line between "The Deep Cut" and "The Dump". Making use of his V Corps and John Hatch's division of McDowell's III Corps, the massed Union attack hit Starke's division with a fury. Though several Union brigades reached the Confederate lines, further support failed to arrive after being stopped in their tracks by concentrated fire from S.D. Lee's batteries. Witnessing the disorderly retreat, McDowell commits perhaps the greatest blunder of the day when he directs Reynolds' division northward to bolster the Yankee center, inadvertantly unmasking the Federal left flank. And it is precisely at this time that Robert E. Lee gives the nod to Longstreet and his fresh 30,000 greyclad troops to advance.
