24 May 1862, Middletown/Newtown, Va [Curt Cabbage]
24 May, 1862: After the Confederates captured Front Royal, on
the 23rd, Jackson kept up the pressure. Ewell's troops began
north up the Front Royal/Winchester road and Jackson's men moved
west toward Middletown, on the Valley Pike. A portion of Ewell's
command dashed west toward Newton, north of Middletown on the
Pike. US General Banks's force evacuated Strasburg, in the morning,
then became strung out on the Pike, trying to reach Winchester
before the Confederates.
