8, 1862: At 3:00 P.M. 4 Union gunboats sailed towards Ft. Griffin,
the Clifton and the Granite City took the Texas channel while
the Arizona and the Sachem took the Louisiana channel. When
the gunboats came within 1200 yards, Ft. Griffin opened up and
in less than an hour had disabled the Clifton and the Sachem,
and forced the withdrawal of the other gunboats. Discouraged,
the Union commanders cancelled the landing of the 500 man landing
party and withdrew to New Orleans. The Union loss 2 gunboats
and 350 men captured, and 75 men killed and wounded. The Confedates
suffered no casualties, but loss two guns.
