]---------------- Originaly to Sherman plan, McPherson Army
of Tennessee is flanking rebel Army stationed in Dalton by manouevering
through Sneak Gap on 8th May 1864. First units arrived through
Gap was Dodge XVI Corps, counting about 10.000 men. Orders for
Dodge, as he interpreted them were to destroy Western&Atlantic
RR and cut off suply line of Johnston Army. Union movement completely
surprised Johnston, only forces in vicinity of Resaca and RR
were Ferguson cavalry brigade - veteran troops and two regiments
of infatry from Cantey division, which were fresh, coming out
of garrison duty on Gulf Coast.
