HSG 2DB Ebersmunster - Combat Mission: Afrika Korps

As light reco troops, the 1er Regiment de Marche de Spahis Marocains has been scouting the right flank of Leclerc, while he advanced towards Strasbourg in late November 44. They soon linked with the US troops crossing the wider part of the Vosges, especially the 36th Texan Infantry Division, which took S�©lestat and was heavily counterattcked by the Germans.
Ordered to move south from Strasbourg, Leclerc's troop encountered terrain very ill suited to tanks on an area full of flooded rivers, swamps and wooded areas.
The 6th and 7th squadron of the Spahis were ordered to take Kogenheim on December 1st and from there to push to Ebersmunter along the Ill River. It will take them almost a month to push from one village to the other. At Xmas, the western part of Ebersmunter was occupied but the Spahis needed to take the abbaye whose both towers (it was impossible to shoot at that cultural heritage) were remarkable observation posts.
The attack was planned in the night of the 27th.
