HSG 3AD A Savage Struggle - Combat Mission: Afrika Korps

0800 24 December, 1944 Freineux, Belgium 2nd Company, 1st Battalion, 2nd SS Panzer Regiment of the 2nd SS Panzer Division was given the task of securing the village of Freineux. These were the veterans of many battles both in the east and the west. They were very seasoned veterans many of them winners of the Knights Cross. They were to be supported by the 1st Company of the "Deutschland" Panzergrenadier Regiment. Task Force Kane was in the village of Freineux under the command of Major Robert Coughlin. Couglin's command consisted of units from the 3rd Armored Division, the Independent 517th Airborne Regiment, and the Independent 643rd Tank Destroyer Battalion. This battle would be against the seasoned and cohesive 2nd SS Panzer Division against the ad-hoc forces of an American Task Force. At 0800 the SS tanks began to move towards Oster. Soon a Kampfgruppe would split off to capture Freineux. The advance must continue if Germany was to have a chance at winning the war. Developments were about to bring these combatants together in a savage struggle for the small village of Freineux.
